What is pollen?

Pollen, which is called pollen in Latin, means a very small substance. Each pollen grain is actually a male plant cell that contains the necessary materials for inoculation of female cells that causes plant reproduction.

There are many factors for pollen to reach female flowers, one of the most important of which are insects, among which bees can be mentioned.

Plants attract various insects by producing nectar, especially honey bees. After the bee sits on the flower, the pollen sticks to the legs and hairs of the bee’s body, and the bee spreads them by moving and sitting on other flowers.

In general, it can be said that the nectar produced by plants serves their reproduction and is a gift that plants give to insects for their survival and indirectly serves them for their survival.

When the bee sits on the flowers, the pollen sticks to the hair-like covering of their body, then the bee collects the pollen on its head and face by rubbing its comb-like legs and mixes it with the collected nectar. He gathers it in a pile and stores it behind his legs, which is in the form of a basket, and takes it to the hive.

Each bee can collect up to 20 mg of pollen in each flight and will sit on at least 200 flowers to get them.

Pollen collected by bees is stored in the hive and used as a main food for young bees and rearing larvae.

Since pollen is rich in protein and other minerals, it plays a very important role in laying queen eggs and increasing the colony population. This is why beekeepers increase the population of their colonies in the spring due to the abundance of pollen in nature.

In general, it can be said that the nutritional role of pollen for bees is far greater than that of honey. Also, young bees need pollen to produce royal jelly, and practically without pollen, the colony will perish.

Beekeepers to collect pollen After the bees have collected enough pollen for their own consumption. At the entrance of the hive, a pollen trap is used so that when the bee enters the hive, the pollen gets stuck in the trap and falls into the container at the bottom of the hive.

Appearance and taste of pollen

As we said, the bee stores the pollen stuck to its body in the form of small balls on the back of its leg. The color of pollen is very dependent on the flower from which the bee took the pollen. For this reason, pollen usually arrives in the hive in different colors such as yellow, orange, green, brown and dark brown.

The taste of pollen, like its color, is very dependent on the source of pollen, and the taste of pollen from one region may be different from another region. But in general, the taste of flower pollen is bitter and slightly sweet.

Important components of pollen

According to research, pollen contains more than 250 biologically active substances, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants.

The most important thing about these compounds is that depending on the source of the pollen and the area from which the pollen was collected, the amount of these compounds can vary. For example, the amount of proteins in one pollen may be very low and in another pollen very high.
